Brand Essence: how to compress a platform into one phrase
Why compress a platform into a phrase at all
A brand platform usually takes up 10–15 pages: mission, values, tone of communication, portfolio architecture. Keeping this in mind when making daily decisions—from packaging design to advertising script—is impossible. Brand Essence solves a specific task: to give the team one semantic anchor that does not change, even when everything else changes.
Volvo's slogans have changed dozens of times over 90 years, its product line has grown from sedans to electric crossovers, but the essence—Safety—remains unchanged since the company's founding in 1927. This is the main sign of a correctly formulated essence: it survives rebrandings, changes in agencies, and entry into new markets.
Essence, promise, slogan and positioning are not synonyms
Confusion between these concepts is the source of half of poor formulations. The difference is not in the words, but in the level and function.
| Element | Function | Does it change | Example (Nike) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand Essence | Invariant strategic core | Practically never | Authentic Athletic Performance |
| Brand Promise | Specific promise to the client | Once every few years | Technologies that give an advantage in sports |
| Slogan | Tactical communicative phrase | Often, under campaigns | Just Do It |
| Positioning | Place in the mind relative to competitors | By markets and categories | May differ in different countries |
How to formulate Brand Essence: working methodology
Formulating essence is not a brainstorming session, but a sequence of filters. Skipping any step almost guarantees a declarative phrase, beautiful but empty.
- Platform audit. You collect mission, values, brand history, interviews with founders or top management, accumulated perception research. The task is not to invent something new, but to find a recurring motif that already lives in the brand.
- Identifying differentiation. You are comparing the discovered motif with 3-5 key competitors. If the formulation equally fits both you and the competitor — it is not ready. For Volvo, safety works because competitors at the time of launching this idea focused on speed and status, not life protection.
- Application of the 'three whys' tool. You take the functional application of the product and ask 'why' three times in a row, delving from utility to meaning. Drill → why? → hang a picture → why? → create a cozy home → why? → feel that the home is your space. The third level often becomes the territory of essence.
- Generation of candidates. Based on the steps of 1-3, you formulate 8-12 essence candidates, strictly in the format of 2-5 words. Do not discard trivial ones — sometimes the third version of a trivial phrase after editing becomes accurate.
- Testing candidates. Each phrase is tested against five criteria from the following section and discussed with a focus group of employees from different departments — not just marketing. If a salesperson, developer, and courier interpret the phrase differently — it has not passed the test.
- Validation with the market. Final 2-3 candidates are tested on clients — through in-depth interviews, not surveys with pre-set answers. Ask what a person imagines when hearing the phrase, without hints.
How to understand that the formulation works
A ready essence must withstand five checks at once. Failing even one point means returning to the generation step.
- Simplicity. The phrase is understandable without explanations, and any company employee can repeat it without hesitation.
- Conciseness. In 2-5 words, the entire semantic scope of the platform is hidden — this is a test for 'scalability': can you restore the mission and values from this phrase, not the other way around.
- Differentiation. The phrase does not fit three nearest competitors if you place their logos next to it.
- Stability. Essence is not tied to the current product or technology and will outlast product line changes by 10-15 years.
- Confirmability. Behind the phrase are real product solutions, not just words. If Safety is not confirmed by engineering developments — it is not essence, but a slogan.
Typical mistakes in formulation
Three errors occur more frequently than others, and all three can be easily recognized in finished client formulations that come for brand rebuilding.
Too abstract essence. Phrases like 'Inspiration', 'Freedom', 'Future' suit almost any category and carry no differentiating load. This is a symptom that step 2 of the methodology — comparison with competitors — was skipped.
Too specific essence. A formulation like 'Fast food delivery' is not the brand's essence, but an operational advantage. Such a phrase will become outdated at the first product line expansion or entry into a related category.
Declaration without confirmation. The most dangerous mistake, because it is not noticeable at the development stage. The company formulates a loud essence — 'Care for everyone' — but the product, service, and internal processes do not match it. The gap between declaration and reality is perceived by the audience faster than it seems, and works against the brand, not for it. That is why the step of verifiability in the methodology is not a formality, but an essential check for honesty.
Essence when expanding the product line and entering new markets
Here essence performs its main function — to work as a filter for strategic decisions, not as a decoration in the brand book. When a company decides whether to launch a new product category or enter a foreign market, the first question is whether this aligns with the essence, not just market potential.
Disney expanded over decades from animation to theme parks, streaming, and cruise ships, but each expansion was checked for alignment with Magical Family Entertainment. If the product did not create this feeling — the project was not launched or restarted under another brand. Apple with Think Different filtered product development direction the same way: the essence was not about technology, but about different thinking, so the product line expanded toward design and simplicity, not toward maximum technical specifications.
When entering new markets, essence remains unchanged, while positioning and communication are adapted. Cloud.ru formulates essence as 'A stable foundation for moving forward' — this phrase works for both corporate clients and startups, regardless of region or specific product in the portfolio. hh.ru with the formulation 'Stay charged' is equally not bound to a specific product — the same phrase accommodates both the job search service and HR tools for business.
