Audit of an existing brand platform: how to conduct
In this article
«We already have a brand platform, why audit it?» — we regularly hear this question from clients. The answer is straightforward: a document that has been gathering dust in the marketing folder for three years almost certainly differs from how clients perceive the company and how employees actually apply it. Audit is not about creating a new document, but about checking whether the old one works.

The difference is fundamental. A general brand audit looks at the company from the outside — competitors, market, visual. Brand platform audit looks inside a specific document: does what is written on 30-50 pages match what is actually happening in reality. Often it turns out that positioning lives its own life in the marketing department's presentation, while the sales department tells clients a completely different story.

What exactly we check: sections of the document under the microscope

A brand platform does not have a standard form — this is a recognized fact. For one company, the document takes up 15 pages, for another (as shown by the example of the Russian Army's platform) — all 50. But regardless of the volume, during an audit there is a specific set of elements that are checked line by line, not 'overall'.

  • Positioning — checked for relevance to the current market: is this the right niche, the right competitive context, has someone else taken the formulation from the past period?
  • Brand archetype — compared with real communication: if the document says 'The Wise Man', but the brand jokes and flirts with the audience as 'The Jester' on social networks, the archetype lives only on paper.
  • Brand voice — checked on texts from the last 6-12 months: newsletters, posts, support responses. If the voice rules are not followed in 80% of cases, the issue is not with the texts, but with the fact that the rules were initially unfeasible.
  • USP — tested for relevance: do the current product and prices confirm it, has the promise become outdated after launching new product lines?
  • Visual identity — checked not on 'like/dislike', but on consistency of application: logo, colors, fonts in real media against the guidelines.

Each item is marked with an assessment of "relevant / partially outdated / requires revision" — this is the basis for the future report.

How to understand that a platform is outdated: timelines and warning signals

Planned checks are recommended to be conducted once every 1-2 years — this period is usually sufficient for the market to change noticeably, and the brand not to lose touch with reality. But waiting for a calendar date is not always reasonable.

An unplanned audit is needed urgently if any of the following events occur: launch of a new product line, change of target audience, emergence of a strong new competitor, noticeable drop in sales. In these cases, a document written "before" no longer explains the company "after" — and continuing to work based on it is dangerous because decisions are made based on outdated assumptions.

There are also quieter signals of obsolescence not related to external events: employees give different answers when asked "what is our mission," the sales and marketing departments describe the customer with different words, new employees cannot find the platform document or do not understand why it is needed. This is also a reason for an audit — not market-related, but internal.

Three audit areas: inside the company, outside, and at the interface with the client

A full audit of the platform covers not just one layer, but three:

  1. Internal branding — values and corporate culture. Verified through interviews with employees: do they know the values by heart, do they apply them in real decisions or is it just a slogan on the wall.
  2. External branding — logo, visual media, communication. Verified through an audit of real materials from the last few months for compliance with the guidelines.
  3. Working with clients — sales and support processes. Verified through a secret shopper, analysis of scripts, review of real support dialogues.

If only the visual is checked, it is easy to miss the main point: the document may look flawless on slides but completely fail to work in a manager's conversation with a client.

Metrics that show whether the platform is working

Evaluation "by eye" — the main mistake of an audit. Measurable indicators are needed, and here the contact branding model of S. Davis and M. Danna works: it suggests looking at 17 metrics at three points of consumer contact with the brand, separating tactical and strategic indicators.

Type of metricWhat it measuresExample of an indicator
TacticalHow the brand works here and nowAwareness, trust, fulfillment of promises
StrategicLong-term platform effectBrand expansion, price premium, loyalty

Share of Search deserves separate mention — in our opinion, it is one of the most honest indicators today. It is calculated by the formula: (brand queries / total queries of all category players) × 100%. An increase in Share of Search after launching a new platform or campaign indicates that the communication really broke through the information noise and did not get lost among competitors.

It is important not to confuse a one-time audit with continuous monitoring. An audit captures the state at a specific moment — like a photograph. Regular monitoring of awareness and satisfaction is already brand tracking, a different type of task requiring a separate measurement regimen.

Case: when the document said one thing, and the market said another

In one project involving an audit of an existing platform for a manufacturing company, the document described the positioning as 'premium technological partner'. On paper, everything sounded convincing: the 'Ruler' archetype, a restrained brand voice, emphasis on expertise. The problem emerged when comparing with reality — on the website, in support emails, and in conversations with the sales department, the company spoke about itself in the language of 'affordable and fast solutions', completely without any premium feel.

Audit by contact points showed that tactical metrics (awareness, trust) were normal, while strategic ones — price premium and loyalty — were at zero. Customers were not paying for 'premiumity' because they did not see it in any real brand contact. The conclusion was not 'rewrite the document more beautifully', but to honestly choose one of two options: either restructure the product and service to match the premium positioning, or remove it from the platform and write what the company actually does. We chose the second path — and the conversion to inquiries increased precisely because the promise matched the experience.

How to present the results: report, recommendations, updated document

Audit results should exist in three layers, not in one common file — that way, they are actually used, not just gathering dust alongside the original platform.

  • Report as an addendum to the platform — captures the state of each element (positioning, archetype, voice, USP, visual) with an assessment and evidence base: screenshots, quotes from interviews, metric figures.
  • List of recommendations with priorities — what to change urgently, what can be postponed to the planned cycle, and what to leave unchanged. Without priorities, recommendations turn into a list of good intentions.
  • Updated version of the platform document — with marked changes and revision date. This is important: the next audit in a year or two should begin with comparing to this version, not the original from five years ago.

After implementing changes, the results should be measured again — using the same metrics that were used in the audit: Share of Search, tactical and strategic indicators of contact branding. Without this step, the audit becomes a paper exercise: changes were made, but no one checked if they work.
