Brand platform for an insurance company
Why the «we are reliable» template no longer works
A bank sells a result that the client sees immediately: transferred money — saw the transaction in the app. An insurance company sells a result that the client physically cannot check at the time of purchase. From this gap, three specific challenges emerge, and they must be embedded into the platform structure, not placed in a separate slide about mission:
- Initial distrust. The client arrives with a pre-formed mindset that «they will find a reason not to pay» — this is not an image problem, but the starting data for positioning that needs to be addressed concretely.
- Opaque product language. Deductible, exceptions, tariff coefficients — the audience does not understand these terms and is not ready to spend time on understanding them.
- Informational asymmetry. The company knows more about the risk than the client, and this structural inequality communication must resolve, not mask with pretty words.
The standard market response to these challenges is the word «reliability» and a stock photo of a family under an umbrella. The audience has memorized this code and no longer reacts to it: essentially, competitors are saying the same thing with different voices. A platform that continues to be built around abstract reliability without evidence does not distinguish the company from the market — it simply adds another voice to the general noise.
Which archetype actually resolves distrust — a practical comparison
The difference is visible not in theory, but in concrete solutions for the Russian market. Mains Cubes moved away from the bureaucratic image through human-centeredness: the slogan 'For those on whom everything depends' and three supporting values — technological advancement, expertise, and humanity — speak not about the company, but about the client and his role in the lives of loved ones. VSK chose the opposite tactic of differentiation: instead of educational content about insurance — memes and unconventional formats in social networks, which brought 73,1 thousand new subscribers and first place in engagement among insurance brands. Nomad Insurance solved a different task — they translated the business logic of merging two companies into a visual metaphor: the 'square' logo and the slogan 'They trust us with the main thing'.
| Approach | What is being conveyed | Risk with weak implementation |
|---|---|---|
| "We are reliable" (classic) | Abstract stability without proof | Complete merger with competitors — the message is the same from all |
| Human-centeredness (Mains) | Concern for a specific person, not the process of application | Requires real service proof — otherwise it looks fake |
| Unconventional tone (VSK) | Vitality and closeness to the audience in social networks | Dissonance with the seriousness of the topic of payouts when the balance is not handled carefully |
| Visual metaphor of strength (Nomad) | Scale and confidence through the image of unity | Works convincingly only with real company growth or merger |
The conclusion from these three cases is the same, although the paths are different: the working archetype of an insurance brand is not 'fortress', but 'guide' or 'ally'. It translates a complex product into understandable actions and does not hide behind generic words about reliability, because such words have long since developed an immunity in the client.
One platform — three different audiences: client, agent, partner
A common mistake in development — writing a platform only for advertising to the end client, forgetting that the same brand must motivate agents and correctly fit into someone else's digital product. The requirements for channels are fundamentally different.
| Channel | What is needed from the brand | Example of implementation |
|---|---|---|
| Direct sales (website, app) | Simple language, speed, minimum client effort | Online application submission with high convenience rating (CES 8,6 out of 10 based on digital services of insurers) |
| Agent network | Brand as employer — status, work convenience, fast access | Potential Agent's VSU Cabinet: registration within 1–2 days, record — 3 hours 18 minutes |
| B2B2C / embedded insurance | Brand as a recognizable, but not intrusive element of a foreign ecosystem | Insurance within a marketplace or banking app as a natural continuation of a purchase |
Mistake that costs more than it seems — writing tone of voice only for the customer front. For embedded insurance, marketing does not compete for attention, but designs a path within a foreign interface: the brand must be readable in a collapsed form — icon, short phrase, color code — without losing its voice. For the agent network, the platform works as an HR tool no less than as a marketing tool: registration in 3 hours — this is also a brand promise, just addressed not to the client, but to the partner who chooses whose policies to sell.
Technology is the character of the brand, not a line in a list of advantages
Typical trap — describing digitalization in the section «advantages», while formulating values separately and abstractly, as if it were about different companies. At «Rosgosstrakh» 43,5% of OSAHO cases and 45% of KASKO cases are already processed through digital channels. This is not a technical detail for an annual report, but a fact that must be formulated as part of the brand's character: «we make a complex process invisible», not «we have an app».
- Technology as a tool: «Download the app, there you can purchase a policy». A message about a feature — is forgotten within a minute after reading.
- Technology as positioning: «Settling claims — where competitors usually lose weeks, we lose hours». A message about the company's character — works as a real differentiator from competitors.
The second formulation turns the operational metric CES 8,6 from 10 into a brand argument that can be used in advertising and sales, not hidden in a report for investors.
How to put this together into one platform structure
Practical algorithm for those building a platform from scratch, not repackaging an existing brand:
- To fix in positioning the initial audience distrust as a problem that the brand solves with specific mechanics, not declarations of honesty.
- Choose an archetype that removes the complexity of the product — a guide, a partner — instead of abstract reliability without proof.
- Specify separate communication layers for three audiences — the client, the agent, and the partner in embedded insurance — with a shared core of values but different delivery and a different vocabulary.
- Include digital metrics of customer speed and effort directly in the value statements, not only in operational KPIs for internal use.
- Take into account regulatory requirements for transparency as part of the tone of voice, not as a limitation that marketing reluctantly accepts.
A strong brand in insurance is a risk management tool for the company, not a decoration for an advertising campaign: it reduces reputational losses during disputed payouts, increases employer attractiveness for the agent network, and is associated with strengthening the company's reputational resilience during critical situations. A platform built without accounting for different channels and without direct work with the client's initial skepticism does not produce this effect — no matter how beautifully the values are written on paper.
