A technological platform is an engineering basis: a set of components, chassis, and electronic architecture on which different models are assembled. MQB at Volkswagen allows producing more than 40 models on one basis, saving up to 80% of common components and reducing assembly time by 30%. Stellantis is preparing a similar solution — STLA One, a mega-platform that from 2027 should support more than 30 models and provide 20% cost savings.
A brand platform operates on a different plane. It does not answer how the car is built, but what it means to a person — mission, values, tone of communication, experience promise. The connection between them is direct: a technical platform provides savings and unification, while a brand platform turns this unification into different stories for different audiences. One MQB base serves both budget Škoda and premium Audi — but the buyer should never notice this at the perception level.
A car is a high-engagement product with a long decision-making cycle. A mistake in choosing costs a buyer not minor inconveniences, but money, time, and sometimes family safety. Therefore, a brand platform in this industry must address not only emotion but also rational client fears.
It is precisely at the intersection of these layers that companies often stumble: they try to sell emotion, forgetting to close the rational question 'won't this car let me down in three years'.
When a single conglomerate has several independent brands, a brand platform cannot be built as a single monolith — an architecture is needed that defines the degree of autonomy for each brand.
| Model | Principle | Example in the automotive industry |
|---|---|---|
| House of Brands | Each brand lives with its own identity, the parent company is hardly visible to the consumer | Volkswagen Group: Porsche, Audi, Škoda, Cupra — different positioning, different audience, common technical base under the hood |
| Branded House | One parent brand, sub-brands — extensions of its own identity | BMW: sub-brands M and i remain part of the unified BMW philosophy, not separate worlds |
Volkswagen Group — classic House of Brands: Porsche sells status, Škoda sells rationality, but both brands save on one technological base. Stellantis follows a similar path with STLA One, while 70% of investments are consciously directed toward four key brands — Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot and Ram, leaving the rest with a smaller share of the brand platform resources. This is a managerial decision, not a technical one: the conglomerate chooses whose history to strengthen more.
BMW solves this task through the cross-cutting idea of 'Joy' — exhilaration from driving, which manifests itself differently in each line. The M series conveys adrenaline and maximum dynamics, the i series — stability and technicity through Efficient Dynamics. Both lines visually and by character are very different, but both are recognized as BMW — because the platform captures not appearance, but an emotional principle that each model must confirm through its behavior on the road.
Ford announced its global platform 'Ready, Set, Ford' in April 2025 year, with the official launch taking place in September 2025 year, deliberately moving away from a feature-based language toward human-centered branding — talking about people's lives, not horsepower. The result is measurable: 78% of respondents named the new message more relevant to their lives, website engagement increased by 12%, and test drive requests rose by 6%.
Tesla went further — built a brand platform around innovations, transformation, and Elon Musk's personal mission, completely abandoning traditional advertising. At the same time, Tesla achieves high customer satisfaction rates (according to various metrics — from 90% to 97%). This proves what industry articles rarely acknowledge: a brand platform can be more effective than technical specifications if it honestly reflects what the brand audience believes in, rather than just a list of features.
Technical platform and brand platform address different tasks and require different owners within the company: engineers are responsible for MQB and STLA, marketing — for the meaning behind the model. For multi-brand conglomerates, choosing the right architecture — House of Brands or Branded House — determines how much money and attention each brand will receive. And within the platform itself, safety and reliability cannot be left in the background — in the automotive industry, this is part of the emotional promise, not an add-on to it.
