Brand and Marketing
The same advertising budget for two companies can yield completely different results — simply because one of them already has a recognizable name. The difference in efficiency is not explained by creativity, but by the fact that marketing here works not from zero, but on top of a ready foundation.
Brand as the foundation of marketing
The same advertising campaign will work differently for a well-known and an unknown brand: a recognizable brand is trusted more, its messages are perceived less critically, and the conversion from ad display to purchase is significantly higher with identical ad placement costs.
That is why large companies with a strong brand can afford more restrained, less aggressive advertising — their brand already does part of the work of building trust, which companies without a recognizable name have to compensate for with more persistent marketing.
Marketing as a tool for strengthening the brand
At the same time, marketing does not only sell — every advertising and communication activity simultaneously forms and strengthens, or, on the contrary, blurs the brand itself, if the message does not correspond to its positioning and tone.
Short-term marketing campaigns focused exclusively on quick sales sometimes conflict with long-term brand building: aggressive discounts and intrusive advertising may increase sales right now, but gradually erode the brand's premium status and trust over the course of several years.
Difference in planning horizon
Marketing is usually oriented toward short-term and medium-term indicators — quarterly sales, conversions, response to a specific campaign. Brand work is planned for years ahead and evaluated by different metrics: recognition, loyalty, willingness to recommend the company to others.
A healthy company balances both horizons at the same time: marketing activities solve tactical tasks right now, without harming the strategic asset — the brand that the company builds for years ahead.
How to avoid conflict between marketing and brand
To prevent marketing activities from harming the long-term brand, companies set boundaries of what is acceptable in the brand book or a separate guideline — which campaigns, formats and promises correspond to the brand's spirit, and which contradict it. Such a filter helps marketing teams act quickly and tactically without destroying the brand's strategic work that the company has built up over the years.
Marketing as feedback for the brand
The audience's reaction to marketing campaigns — response, engagement, comments — provides the brand with valuable data on how accurately the current positioning resonates with real market expectations, and can serve as a signal for strategy adjustment.
In the end, a strong brand can be viewed as accumulated marketing capital: the larger it is, the less money is required for each subsequent unit of sales, making brand work one of the most profitable long-term marketing investments a company can make.
