How to save on branding without losing quality
Short version: saving on branding doesn't necessarily mean low quality — it's important to understand where you can cut the budget without risk, and where cost-saving is more expensive in the future. The article covers what can be simplified and what should not be touched.
Where you can safely save
The number of touchpoints at the start — it's not necessary to adapt the style immediately for all 20 possible contact points; you can start with 5-7 key ones and add the rest as the company grows. Document format — a brief brand guide of 15-20 pages instead of excessive 100 pages for a startup company. Number of design iterations — a clearly formulated brief reduces the number of revisions and, accordingly, the time spent by the contractor.
Where it's risky to save
Trademark availability check — skipping it may cost the company a name change and reputational losses in the future, which is much more expensive than the check itself. Competitor analysis before logo development — without it, there's a high risk of unintentional visual similarity with a competitor. Legal documentation of rights to created materials — without a properly drafted contract, the company risks not having legal rights to its own logo.
Can branding be entrusted to a student or junior designer for the sake of saving money? It can be done for a very limited budget, but it's worth accounting for the risk of lack of methodology — market and competitor analysis, and trademark availability check. Is it worth saving by skipping the briefing and going straight to sketches? No — a briefing is cheap in terms of time, but saves much more on revision stages due to misunderstanding of the task. How to tell if a low price hides risks? If the cost does not include a trademark availability check and competitor analysis — this is a sign of a shortened, risky process.
